ABOUT THE ART

Sienna Van Slooten’s artwork explores the quiet beauty, fragility, and interconnectedness of the natural world. Rooted in close observation and a background in scientific illustration, her work balances accuracy with imagination, allowing room for curiosity, narrative, and moments of play.

Much of Sienna’s work is informed by a desire to draw attention to the effects of climate change and habitat loss, and to honor species that may be entering their final century on Earth. Some pieces focus on individual species, while others explore relationships between plants and animals, or imagine improbable pairings that invite a sense of wonder alongside awareness.

Through both precise detail and gentle whimsy, her work asks viewers to slow down, look closely, and reconnect with the living world — not only as it exists, but as it might be remembered, protected, and loved.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sienna Van Slooten was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and grew up surrounded by art, inspired by both her mother and grandmother. She earned a BFA in Studio Art from Wheaton College in Massachusetts, followed by a graduate certificate in Science Illustration from California State University Monterey Bay.

While trained in traditional scientific illustration techniques, Sienna now works at the intersection of science and fine art, using graphite, watercolor, and colored pencil to create pieces that blend careful observation with creative interpretation. She has worked full-time as a freelance artist and illustrator since 2021.

Sienna’s original work is represented by Kay Contemporary in Santa Fe, and she shows reproductions of her work (archival prints and greeting cards) at the Railyard Artisan Market and the SF Farmers’ Market. She currently lives and works in Santa Fe.
